Mountains & hiking in Zell am See

Kitzsteinhorn, Schmittenhöhe, and Maiskogel are the region's three top spots. With hundreds kilometres of slopes and hiking trails and numerous exciting experiences & attractions in summer, they offer something for everybody.

Schmittenhöhe

With an altitude of almost 2,000 m, Schmitten is Zell am See's backyard mountain. The ski and hiking paradise offers a great range of adventures all year round. In winter, 77 kilometers of pistes await the winter sportsperson. In summer, the mountain turns into a hiking paradise that is ideal for the entire family.

Mystical Forest

The mystical forest on Schmitten offers a great hiking adventure for the entire family. The themed hiking trail has various stations which retell Pinzgau legends.

  • Starting point: Sonnkogelbahn summit station

Possible places for stopping off at are the Sonnkogel Restaurant and Schmiedhofalm. For kids there is also the white stag adventure playground ("Weißer Hirsch") up on the Schmiedhofalm.

Schmidolin's Baptism of Fire

Schmidolin's Baptism of Fire is the ideal adventure hiking trail for the entire family. Here you can answer tricky questions, pass daredevil tests of courage, and show off your skills at climbing, balancing, and floating above the ground. All those who complete all of the stations and enter them into their adventure passport receive a certificate and a reward.

Schmidolin the dragon ages step by step along the trail. The Dragon Fire, Dragon's Den and Firecastle playgrounds invite you to romp around.

On Schmidolin's Bike, the training parcours at the areitXpress summit station, kids between 6 and 12 years can have their first e-motocross experiences. After a brief instruction the kids can enjoy 20 min. of exclusive riding time.

Herb/Gusto Hike

The herb & gusto hike is a family-friendly hike during which much can be learned about the natural environment of Pinzgau. The local wild-growing herbs are described on info boards set on the circular hiking trail.

The guided herb and gusto hike takes place every Friday, from June to September. For 1.5 hours, Fredi, the herb expert, leads the way and shows guests where the specialties grow and how they can be used in various ways.

At the Sonnkogel restaurant all herbs and their products can be tried. By the way, in the spacious raised beds along the herb trail one can see all these Alpine treasures grow.

E-Motocross Park

The environmentally-friendly e-motocross park is located at the summit station of areitXpress. This action-filled offer is aimed at all age groups - from the age of 6 years the youngest may have a try at Schmidolin's Bike. The park is not only open to experienced motocross bikers - beginners will receive comprehensive instruction and can practice in the trial park.

Protective gear is available on site, sturdy shoes are required. During heavy rain the motocross park on Schmittenhöhe is closed.
